Racing Legend

1954 – Mexico –  the Carrera Panamericana, the most dangerous road race in the world, running from border to border across Mexico was in it’s 5th and final year before it was cancelled due to the sheer danger and number fatalities of both competitors and spectators alike.  US company Fletcher Aviation were working with Porsche behind the scenes on a new cooling system and chose to be the main sponsors for the two 550 Spyders entered in the race. This was the first known instance of team sponsorship ever in motorsport and along with Telefünken radio and Castrol showing support the cars rolled out as typographical masterpieces. One of which I was lucky enough to see in the metal at the Porsche Classics at the Castle event.
